Thomas Herscht,: Popular Music from Austria in Digital, Multimedia Archives. On the Construction of a National and Regional Pop-rock Heritage

Popular music has now become a well established constituent of archives, museums and other institutions that are committed to cultural heritage. This article explores the issue as to how specific digital, multimedia archives – the Österreichische Mediathek (OeM), Skug Research-Archiv österreichischer Popularmusik (SRA), Rockarchiv Steiermark and the Trash Rock Archives – construct an Austrian or Styrian pop-rock-heritage. The aim is to highlight the divergent strategies of accumulating and collecting products and documents of Austrian pop-rock, while identifying the strategies of re-enacting such material in terms of a valuable past. The analysis demonstrates that the investigated archives construct competing designs of a national or regional pop-rock-heritage rather than presenting a unified heritage.
