Karin Sardadvar: »Taking a Chance« – The Understanding of Contraception in Context of the Desire to Have a Child in Advanced Age

This article deals with symbolic interpretations of contraception in context of the desire to have a child in advanced age. Based on a qualitative analysis of »late motherhood«, three empirical examples are being presented. They are discussed by drawing on an interpretative understanding of contraception as well as on approaches from family sociology. The first example is to interpret the first-time unprotected sexual intercourse as the partner’s symbolic approval for having a child. The second example is to refer to »taking a chance« by discontinuing the use of contraception, which can be understood as a manifestation for the complexity of establishing a family. The third example is to resume taking contraceptives after a phase of an unfulfilled desire to have children, which may communicate a final point for this phase and gives information on the construction of age limits for motherhood.
