Theresia Oedl-Wieser: Implementation of Gender Mainstreaming in the Rural Development of Austria – Neglects and Perspectives
Since the accession of Austria to the European Union in 1995, rural development policies have become increasingly important, both in political and in financial aspects. In the current program period (2007–2013), 8 billion € will be spent on rural policy measures in Austria. This article analyzes, to which extent rural development policy and its instruments have the potential of transforming the gender-relations in favor of more equality. Considering the strategy of »gender mainstreaming«, interested in implementing gender equality in all political concepts and measures of the European Union, it will be discussed, how comprehensively this strategy has been realized in the rural development policies of Austria and which impacts it had and possibly will have for the progressive promotion of gender-relations in the rural areas.
