Bernadette Kneidinger: National Identity Construction in Austrian and Swiss Sports Media Coverage – a Qualitative Content Analysis of the European Football Championship 2008
National identities have not lost their importance, even not in an era of globalization. This is particularly obvious for major sport events like the Olympic Games or the Football World Cup, respectively the European Football Championship. Media coverage of these events incorporates a major emphasis focusing on national identity, sportive competition turns into a competition between nations and athletes receive a status of national heroes. The qualitative content analysis of media coverage of an Austrian and a Swiss popular newspaper during the European Football Championship 2008 shows how media, in these two countries, construct national identity differently and what the status of multiculturalism is for the own nation.
