Doris Bammer / Petra Ziegler: Employment and Doctoral Studies – Selected Results for the Socio-economic Situation of Doctoral Students at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna
Doctoral students at the faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna are confronted with different challenges. Most students are concerned how to balance their employment with their doctoral studies. Our project study about the socio-economic situation of doctoral students examines these challenges and provides new data on biographical background, the financing of the doctoral studies, progress assessments, and needs and requests of doctoral students. A particular focus concentrates on differences in relation to gender and the chosen study program. One key result is that a compatibility between employment and doctoral studies is being assessed as rather difficult to achieve. Problems vary due to the type of employment, earnings, the relevance of work experience for the personal CV, and caring duties. These factors determine time budget priorities for the doctoral studies and the progress of the studies.
