Mariam I. Tazi-Preve: Policy on Fatherhood
Most studies on the influence of family policy on family structures and other family-related issues account only insufficiently for the role of the father within these structures. This contribution will explore, whether the Austrian welfare state pursues policies aimed specifically at fathers and what is the nature of such policies. The article assumes that political regulations of family are to be regarded between the conflicting priorities of family, labour market and the state, and this is the only way that contradictions in the policy on fatherhood and the ambivalent attitudes of fathers themselves can be explained. In this regard the contribution focuses on exploring the gender paradigm of Austrian policies relating to family issues and the implementation of political and legal measures. Furthermore, the norms and conventional ideas about family, which underlie political decision-making processes, will be reviewed. The results demonstrate that Austrian policies on fatherhood are ambivalent.
