Herbert Langthaler / Helene Trauner: The Austrian Asylum Regime and the Role of Civil Society Organisations
The article presents selected findings of a study on »Political Participation and Representation of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in the EU«. Within a framework of analysis of political opportunity structures we examine the civil society participation of refugees and asylum seekers, the roles how refugees and asylum seekers are being portrayed in public discourses on asylum policy as well as the relationship of refugee self-organisations to professional NGOs that assist refugees. Whereas NGOs are central concerning the care and counselling of refugees, the activities and the potential of refugee self-organisations, in this field, receive only limited attention, and they are largely cut off from public resources.
