Angelika Böck: IMAGINE ME – a Self-Portrait as Dialogue – Yemen 2007
This article contribution not only attempts to present an art project in a conventional way by focusing on its exhibition and documentation. The artist describes her work starting with the key question and concept, followed by the project realization, her observations and the perceived reactions of others. Whom do we »see«, when we look at a (veiled) person? Is a man or woman, socialized in a culture of the veil, capable of assigning certain characteristics and qualities to a human body by means of form, posture and motion? Yemenite men and women are being asked these questions by IMGAGINE ME, touching upon various aspects of our self – memory, reflection, recognition, dialogue, narration (stories), and fiction.
